Anthony Page
Co-Artistic Director, 1969-1972.
Anthony began his career at the Royal Court as an assistant in 1958. He took over George Devine’s Artistic Directorship 1964–1965 due to the latter’s illness and, later, became Co-Artistic Director 1969-1972, along with Lindsay Anderson and William Gaskill. In 1961, he was Artistic Director of the Dundee Repertory Theatre.
I was incredibly lucky to start my career at the Royal Court. At that time it was unique. The work was based on an attempt to enrich the English theatre rather than on commercialism. It was filled with people of very differing temperaments and views, but who respected each other. It felt like an isolated endeavour in the theatre but one in which you were ready to totally commit yourself to what seemed, at the time, like the possibility of changing society.
