Romania
Since 1997
The Royal Court has been working with Romanian writers since 1997 when Elyse Dodgson, director Mary Peate and playwright Rebecca Prichard travelled to Bucharest to run workshops at the New Drama Festival in Târgu Mureş. Since then, a number of Romanian playwrights have attended the International Residency including Gianina Cărbunariu, whose play Kebab was produced by the Royal Court as part of the 2007 International Season.
In 2006, Rebecca Pritchard and director Orla O’Loughlin travelled to Bucharest to work with a group of emerging writers in collaboration with the British Council and UNITER.
Orla returned to Bucharest with playwright Chloe Moss to continue this work the following year. Several of the writers from the group have attended the International Residency, most recently Mihaela Michailov (2009) and Maria Manolescu (2007).
