The Royal Court has been working with Spanish writers and directors since 1993 and has a partnership with three theatres: Sala Beckett in Barcelona, Cuarta Pared in Madrid and Centro Andaluz de Teatro (CAT) in Seville.
In 1997, the Royal Court presented Voices from Spain, and a production of Bazaar by David Plannel formed part of the New European Writers Season. A number of workshops have taken place including a collaboration with the Sitges Festival in 2002. Juan Mayorga’s short play, The Good Neighbour, was produced in the 2002 International Season followed by a full production of Way to Heaven in 2005.
In 2007, the Royal Court celebrated 10 years of working in Spain with a new collaboration supported by the British Council. Five young Spanish writers joined five young British writers and members of the Royal Court team for a week of experimentation at the Hurst – the John Osborne Arvon Centre in Shropshire.
More Spanish writers have attended the International Residency than any other country, the latest being Antonio Rojano in 2010.
