The Royal Court first became involved with theatre practitioners in Uganda in 1992 and, since then, many Royal Court playwrights and directors have run workshops there.
As a result, the National Playwriting Network (NPN) was created in Kampala to organise new writing festivals and, in 2001, six of the Ugandan writers developed their plays at the Royal Court. Four returned in July as part of LIFT 01 to present work-in-progress performances of Fire in My Head – New Plays from Uganda in the Jerwood Theatre Upstairs, developed with UK directors and a mixed company of Ugandan and Black British actors.
Since 2004, many Ugandan playwrights have attended the International Residency, including Philip Luswata whose short plays were presented in two International Seasons at the Royal Court.
