The Royal Court Theatre and Ijinle Theatre Company present
The Lion and the Jewel
By Wole Soyinka
First Performance: 12 December 1966
The Lion and the Jewel, ‘a light comedy’ about African tradition vs. Western civilization, was presented by Ijinle Theatre Company at the Royal Court. Its melding of Yoruba song, dance and mime with English playwriting conventions was alternately praised and patronized by critics. Today, it is one of Wole Soyinka’s most celebrated works.
