Reviews
I was however, gripped, in a genteel way, by the autobiographical, often vulgar revelations in Natasha Betteridge’s elegant production.
Fountain offers a beautifully ironic and amusing account of a man who starts off gay in youth’s first flush, at 14 in a Bradford bus station loo, and then tries everything by fits and starts, and little too long.
He stands there, this charming, quite handsome, Bradford born drama graduate, wooing us, quite literally men and women alike.
Sex Addict is salacious, but Fountain’s honesty about his sexual drives and his hankering for affairs illuminates life’s shrouded, significant, erotic hinterland.
Nicholas de Jongh, EVENING STANDARD, 11 January 2005
Close your eyes and imagine Alan Bennett talking extremely dirty.
Ian Johns, THE TIMES, 12 January 2005
What do we call this? Reality theatre? Gay sociology? Liberalism gone mad? Just plain tacky?
Alastair Macauley, FINANCIAL TIMES, 12 January 2005
Does Sex Addict offer anything more than debased titillation for our voyeuristic age? Well, Fountain is a surprisingly engaging performer, and his show certainly opens a revealing window on a world that, as a married heterosexual, I look on with a mixture of envy and revulsion.
Charles Spencer, THE DAILY TELEGRAPH, 12 January 2005
Fountain has enough deadpan charm to make his excursions into a funny one-off autobiographical sketch
Susannah Clapp, THE OBSERVER, 16 January 2005
XXX- rated version of Dave Gorman’s amiable Internet excursions; Graham Norton without the smutty smirking.
Yet not only does it offer its home crowd some liberated comedy, this extreme show is also the fleshy embodiment of a human truth highlighted by the internet- in the great eBay of sex, everyone will find some trade.
Victoria Segal, THE TIMES, 16 January 2005
It was like Sex in the City with Dame Thora Hird.
Kate Bassett, THE INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY, 16 January 2005
